About Us

The University of Abuse Hurts Initiative is a cross-campus collaboration promoting prevention of and effective response to domestic or intimate partner abuse and sexual violence affecting members of the University community.

A primary mandate is to:

  1. Raise awareness of domestic violence
  2. Provide support, when appropriate, to employees experiencing domestic violence
  3. Give guidance to management on addressing the occurrence of domestic violence and its effects on the workplace
  4. Create a safer work environment.

Another top Abuse Hurts priority is preventing and responding to violence among students.

An Executive Committee comprising senior University leaders guides the Initiative.

Our Project Team includes representatives from many sectors of the University working together to create a safe campus community.

We are fortunate to have strong and willing campus and community partners on whom we rely for the success of the Abuse Hurts Initiative.

U-M Building Services is an invaluable partner in placing safety information cards in campus restrooms.

The State of Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board and SafeHouse Center deliver Abuse Hurts training on domestic violence in the workplace for UM managers and supervisors. Contact us to schedule training for your UM organization.

SafeHouse Center and Alternatives to Domestic Aggression of Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County consulted with us on policy guidelines.
